Introduction
Who is the Agency for Roads & Traffic (AWV)?
AWV is responsible for the construction and maintenance of road infrastructure in Flanders. To carry out this task effectively, it must always have a clear overview of the current status of its assets. Achieving this requires more than just digitalization.
Pàu provided both technical and business support to AWV. We assembled a team with complementary skills and backgrounds in data science, functional analysis, and 3D modeling.
Challenge
Gaining visibility into the status of assets
When we began the project, there was no clear understanding of the organization’s internal processes. The complexity of the existing workflows played a significant role in this lack of clarity. Different departments were following various procedures, which made it challenging to get a unified overview of operations. This inconsistency created inefficiencies and hindered the ability to track the status of company assets in real time.
Coordinating different approaches, priorities, and levels of digitalization across various stakeholders was a major challenge. Each partner, whether internal or external, had its own systems, standards, and expectations, which made seamless collaboration difficult. Achieving alignment between these varied processes required careful planning and robust integration strategies. Only then could the organization gain a clear and accurate picture of asset status, improving decision-making and operational efficiency.
Approach
Advising and supporting throughout the digital transformation
Iteration was central to our approach, allowing us to continuously learn, improve, and adapt to changing needs. By testing quickly and gathering feedback, we created solutions that were not only technically strong but also perfectly aligned with user expectations. This ensured impactful digital products that improved with every step.
Whenever a strong idea emerged, a research team conducted a Proof of Concept (PoC) to clarify the idea both within and outside the organization. Communication with stakeholders and change management were top priorities for AWV. The team’s results had to remain aligned with the company’s needs and stakeholder expectations at all times!
We assembled a team with complementary expertise in data science, functional analysis, and 3D modeling.
With UML, we were able to create object-oriented analyses and designs for information systems.
Solution
Technical solutions
Thanks to automated release notes, all updates and changes are automatically documented and shared. This saves significant time on the development side.
The BIM Viewer enables project members to inspect 3D models, metadata, and construction information in detail. They can toggle layers, create cross-sections, and retrieve object data as needed.
Scripts are used to efficiently generate, analyze, and optimize complex spatial and architectural data. They automate time-consuming tasks such as model creation, design rule validation, and scenario simulation.
The BDC converts complex BIM data into standardized, usable formats that can be seamlessly integrated into various digital workflows. This enhances data exchange between systems and promotes more efficient collaboration in construction and infrastructure projects. It ensures consistent and reliable data access for all stakeholders.
Business solutions
The team more than doubled during the project. Through analysis, we provided the right support for team management.
An Object Type Library (OTL) is a structured data model that defines standards for objects. This simplifies the management of complex datasets and enables consistent collaboration across different teams.
